F.A.Q's about Solar panels

Frequently asked questions about Solar panels
& our solar installations.

What is sustainable energy?
Sustainable energy is best thought of as energy which can be replenished within a human lifetime and which causes no long-term damage to the environment. Solar energy, wind energy, and geothermal energy, amongst others, are all self-sustaining. They all have sources that cannot be depleted. Extended use of these energy sources aids the conservation of other non-renewable energy sources such as fossil fuels.

How does Solar Heating technology work?
The idea behind technologies which use solar energy is to harness the freely available rays from the sun in a useful form. The technology used for solar water heating is simple and effective. The basic principle uses an absorber plate which is heated by the sun's rays. This heat is collected in a transfer liquid which is in turn used in a heat exchanger to heat water.

Do I need to have a particular type of roof for Solar installation?
Ideally to a south facing roof or slight deviations of about 15 - 30° from that. The inclination / pitch of the collector is equal to the geographical latitude. So if you live at 45° latitude north the ideal pitch is about 45°. Once again slight deviations are not a problem and will only slightly effect the solar yield. A variety of brackets and frames are available for solar heating systems to suit different types roof types (pitched and flat) and different types of roof tiles.
We also can mount the panels at different locations other than the roof of your property. Our free 'solar survey' will assess the optimum position to place the panels for your property.

What are the savings?
Savings of up to 50 - 70% annually on the heating cost for your hot water and/or heating. Once you have the panel installed that amount of energy is free for you. The main percentage of your water heating cost is done away through the use of the solar panel. Over time, your savings will increase as the price of oil / gas / electricity and other fossil fuels will increase in the future. Lower maintenance and longer life of your boiler will also provide considerable savings.
Solar also reduces the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions helping to protect the environment from being polluted. CO2 is one of the largest single contributors towards global warming.

Do I need planning permission?
Normally only if the building is in a conservation area / listed building or under construction - but you should check with your local planning office. Our panels are environmentally friendly and aesthetically pleasing.

What does an installation involve?
Thermomax collectors are light and modular and can usually be installed by a qualified professional in 1-2 days. They are supplied with an aluminium frame and, being lightweight, they will attach easily to your existing structure. The solar tubes allow air to circulate around them and will not trap moisture or debris.

Is it possible to retain heat gained?
The heat can be stored in different ways - normally it is stored in a twin coil solar cylinder for domestic hot water. It can also be used for solar space heating or to heat a swimming pool. It also possible to combine the different applications.

Is it possible to obtain a grant for installing a conspect solar panel?
*Yes. All of the models we supply from the Kingspan / Thermomax solar panel range are approved by the S.E.I. Greener homes scheme(phase3).
Our team of installers from the 'Green energy store' are approved by the SEI to install all of our solar and renewable energy products.
Under the Sei Greener homes scheme we will assist you in applying for the full grant fund available to your home. (Terms & Conditions apply).

What maintenance is required?
No collector maintenance is required. The glass tubes are round and perfectly smooth; any dirt or dust is carried away by the wind and/or rain. There are no moving parts to wear out. All components are made from high-grade stainless steel, aluminium, copper or non-corrosive materials. Maintenance contracts can be provided for fluid (anti-freeze) top up and a check of all valves, seals and the electric pump to ensure you are getting the best performance from the system can take place at yearly intervals and can be provided by conspect engineers.
